Deena Adler, Executive Producer of ‘Odean’s List’ announced today that Odean Pope, one of Philadelphia’s legendary saxophone players, will release a new CD in conjunction with In+Out Records (www.inandout-records.com) in Europe this November 27, 2009 and in N. America through Allegro, this February 2010. In+Out Records (In the Groove and Out of the Ordinary) is a European, independent jazz label that has built a reputation for producing innovative contemporary jazz with international acclaim for many of its releases.
Founder and CEO, Frank Kleinschmidt, says:
“I am thrilled to see this album by Odean Pope to be released on In+Out Records. I have known Odean since way back when he first came to Europe with Max Roach. After that, the first album he made for Moers Music with Gerald Veasley and Cornell Rochester didn’t leave my record player for weeks. ‘Odean’s List’ is a gem! The spirit of this album contains the very essence of what the best jazz has always been – original, creative music with these greatmusicians having the courage to soar both individually and collectively with Odean Pope’s compositions.”
Gabriele Kleinschmidt Promotions (www.gkp-promotions.de) will coordinate the touring schedule that follows.
The CD is ‘Odean’s List’
Odean Pope, James Carter, Walter Blanding, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Terell Stafford, David Weiss, Lee Smith, George Burton
The spirit of the CD is a collective effort; horn ensembles, many extended solos, one duet and one trio piece. The horns produce Odean Pope’s gorgeously harmonic musical precision as sound surround for the virtuosic, sometimes acrobatic solos provided by all in turn. Odean Pope says:
“I’m so honored to have had the opportunity to play this music because it brings together some of the greatest musical minds in the world today.”
‘Odean’s List’ was recorded in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on October 14, 2008. This, together with Odean Pope’s compositions and the stellar musical lineup, contributes to the excitement by those who have heard advance copies. “Hot House Jazz” calls ‘Odean’s List’ “a knockout!” Archie Shepp, who wrote the liner notes, says:
“On his latest album, ‘Odean’s List,’ Mr. Pope demonstrates remarkable agility with the pen as both composer and arranger…This album is another triumph performed by some of the best musicians on the scene today.”
